Social Impact Assessments (SIAs)

The social licenses for development projects are usually identified as a key deliverable to their acceptability in sub-Saharan Africa. Social impact assessment includes the processes of analyzing, monitoring and managing the intended and unintended social consequences, both positive and negative, of planned interventions (policies, programs, plans, projects) and any social change processes invoked by those interventions (IAIA; Vanclay, 2003). Its primary purpose is to bring about a more sustainable and equitable biophysical and human environment.

General SIA objectives include:
Assist communities and other stakeholders to identify development goals, and ensuring that positive outcomes are maximized.
Contribute to the process of adaptive management of policies, programs, plans and projects and sustainable development of the planned project.
Build on local knowledge and utilise participatory processes to analyse the concerns of interested and affected parties. It will involve stakeholders in the assessment of social impacts, the analysis of alternatives, and monitoring of the planned intervention.
Attempt to develop a nexus between social, economic and biophysical impacts which are inherently and inextricably interconnected.

ECS has undertaken similar projects and brings its knowledge and expertise to bear by conducting local and institutional stakeholder consultations to deepen project understanding, solicit concerns and itemize red flag issues associated with projects.
